90s Style Then and Now
In general, 90s style gets a tough deal–and, to be fair, there were a decent amount of truly heinous pieces out there. But there were a lot of gems, too! So many of my favorite movies were filmed in the 90s, and a great part of why I love them is their style–The Parent Trap, You’ve Got Mail, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Sabrina, among others. The 90s are having a heyday again, and while some pieces should be left far in the past, there are other pieces that I’m glad are coming back! Here are a few snapshots of my mother from the 90s in items that would work just as well today.
I was inspired to write this post after seeing these sunglasses on Stephanie Covington, this post on The Love List from Jess Graves, and my annual viewing of You’ve Got Mail.
The look: leather bomber jacket, black stretch pants, white long-sleeved tee, and black smoking slippers (not pictured here, along with two costume-clad children for a Halloween celebration in the East Village)
The look: polo shirt, cat-eye sunglasses–very Sabrina (the Julia Ormond version), pearl earrings
The look: windbreaker, black cropped stretch pants, pearl earrings, Stubbs & Woottons, a tranquil East Village scene
The look: matching set (1, 2, 3, 4,), pearl necklace, pearl earrings, gold watch, polo game in the distance
The look: Puff-sleeved coat, Burberry scarf, ancient Volvos, Manhattan the way it was (watch Metropolitan if you never got a glimpse yourself!)
Are you embracing 90s style or leaving it in the past? I’m eager to hear from you!
