There is nothing I love more than a sweater, and I eagerly await sweater weather year-round. Here are the four types of sweaters you need in your closet.

An old-school cardigan
I think that everyone’s wardrobe would be a little better with a proper, polished cardigan in it. There’s something so elegant about a twinset: formal with a skirt or nice trousers; classic with jeans. I wear my cardigans over everything: crewneck tees, turtlenecks, and on occasion a silk blouse. A great casual wool sweater
There’s nothing I love more than a cozy wool sweater. However, it’s really, really hard to find a great one. I have a vast collection of vintage sweaters from my grandmother and her best friend, but tracking down one in the modern world has proven to be an increasingly difficult task. I have my eye on sweaters from &Daughter and Eleanor Leftwich, both brands with a focus on craft and quality. I’d also like to recommend La Ligne’s sweaters. I recently received one as a gift from the brand (as mentioned above) and I’m delighted with how well-made the sweater is: the wool is plush and soft (7-ply yarn, which is insane for a contemporary sweater)—a huge difference from many new sweaters I’ve tried. A turtleneck sweater
One of my earliest blog posts was titled “The Turtleneck: The Unsung Wardrobe Heroine.” I wear turtlenecks as often as I can, particularly layered under cardigans or lady jackets. I also love a standalone turtleneck sweater (like my Aran sweater, which you can see here.) Simply put, turtlenecks are a practical yet chic way to add a touch of polish to any outfit, whether you’re out walking in the country or at a luncheon in the city.

A Shetland sweater
A Shetland sweater is a classic seen in most men’s closets, but very few women’s wardrobes. That being said, I love Shetland sweaters and their “shaggy dog” feel. I have a great Shetland sweater from Ann Mashburn, knitted on the off-gauge so it has a light and airy feel. I also have a very old bottle-green Burberry Shetland from my mother that is one of my favorite sweaters, but unfortunately has a giant hole in the elbow. I have my eye on one of O’Connell’s excellent selection of Shetland sweaters for this winter.
