My Favorite Summer Cocktail

I love welcoming friends for a cocktail hour–honestly, I sometimes wish I could just make a meal out of hors d’oeuvres! It’s also fun to mix up our favorite cocktails. As part of my entertaining series, I wanted to share a recipe for my favorite summer cocktail, the Southside. I stumbled across an article in the Baltimore Sun that described the Southside as “a tangy cocktail made with mint, citrus juices and secrets,” and that’s not wrong! I’ve seen the recipe made with gin or vodka, but for us, Mount Gay is the only way to make it!

Ingredients

Mount Gay rum
Sweet & sour mix (an equal ratio of sour lemon juice and simple syrup works well, or a little more lemon if you prefer, but you can also buy sweet & sour mix if you’re in a rush)
Club soda
Mint
Ice

Muddle mint in a highball glass, then fill with ice. Add about 1.5 oz of Mount Gay (or more, to taste), then add about 2 oz. sweet & sour mix. Pour into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously, then return to the glass and add club soda. Add another mint sprig and it’s ready!

What’s your favorite summer cocktail?

    1. Hi Peggy, thanks for letting me know! I had bookmarked that link a long time ago and hadn’t checked recently. For the sweet & sour mix, using an equal ratio of simple syrup and sour lemon juice works well! I’ll update that in the post. Enjoy 🙂

  1. This sounds so good! I’m always looking for ways to use up my bumper crop of mint. And yes to the meal of hors d’oeuvres!!

  2. An Arnold Palmer with a shot of Bourbon.

I think it goes by several names but “The Back Nine” seems to be most appropriate.
